The Conference

The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) decided in its first session in 2002 to make indigenous children and youth a focal point of its work, in recognition of the fact that the children and youth are the world’s most valuable resource. The indigenous youth are the link between the traditional past and the still-unfolding future of indigenous peoples. It is thus very important to harness the valuable contributions that they can make to any development effort, especially in the protection of the environment and biological diversity. Unfortunately, indigenous youth and women are not accorded equal opportunities for participation in decision-making and the wider socio-political processes.

The indigenous youth, in particular, are unable to fully articulate their needs and aspirations, and their possible catalytic role in the development process is not realized. The project seeks to address this situation. The capacity building and skills training is aimed at harnessing the dynamism and idealism of the indigenous youth for international environmental campaigns, and their greater participation in activities of the United Nations. The series of activities is envisioned to result in the capability building and empowerment of indigenous youth for a greater role in the second decade for indigenous peoples, in line with the United Nations resolutions in this regard. The activities are designed this way in order to maximize resources and the travel of indigenous youth delegates and the experts who are coming as speakers.

Financial Assistance

APIYN coordinators and secretariat are actively raising funds to bring participants from Asia and the Pacific region to the conference, but we encourage participants to raise their own finances because we cannot guarantee that we will be able to support all applicants.
